Israel's Tourist Industry: On Brink of Collapse
by Betzalel Kahn

Thursday, 7 Tammuz, pages 6,7

Buckets of ink have been spilled while describing the sad state of the Israeli economy since the recent outbreak of violence. All areas of life have been affected. Foreign investors have bolted, as projects and plans are frozen, though it seems that trouble in world financial markets and cyclical forces are the strongest influences here. No branch of the economy has made any headway since the outbreak of riots.

OPINION & COMMENT

Our Struggle for Israel's Soul

Last Friday night (parshas Chukas), during a meeting of the Socialist International in Lisbon, Portugal, Israel's Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, met with Yasser Arafat (whose socialist credentials are at least as strong as his peacemaking credentials) at the official residence of the prime minister of Portugal. Though the possibility of such a meeting was foreseen, nevertheless it caused a political storm in Israel.

Staying Back
by A. Ross

For centuries, the Jews have been known as an amibitious nation. They have a drive, both for themselves and their offspring, to shine academically. This trait is inherent in our people, regardless of whether they keep all of the mitzvos or not.

The earliest time of Kiddush Levonoh -- Av

The time of Kiddush Levonoh everywhere in the world begins when it is Monday, the eve of 4 Av (July 23), at 9:24 according to the summer clock, in Eretz Yisroel. At that time sunset is 7:25 P.M. and on an average the moon sets three days after the molad and two hours and twenty- six minutes after sunset. On this night one can make a berochoh on Kiddush Levonoh and surely so in Europe and America, but it is impossible to make a berochoh this night in eastern countries.

"One should not make Kiddush Levonoh before Tishah B'Av or on Motzei Tishah B'Av" (Ramo). The minhag of Belz is like the Ramo but the Mishnah Berurah rules in the name of the Achronim to make a berochoh on Motzei Tishah B'Av. The Vilna Gaon and the Perushim in Eretz Yisroel, the Chazon Ish and the Steipeler Rav, made Kiddush Levonoh before Tishah B'Av when it was three days after the molad as on every month. (Birur Halocho, V, Orach Chaim, 426).
