IDF Seizes 160 in Hebron, Nablus; Hope for Truce in Gaza

Israel Defense Forces troops swept into various Palestinian cities early on Tuesday, seizing more than 160 suspects in the course of a large-scale raid on Hebron and a manhunt in the Casbah of Nablus. The army said it was trying to head off Hamas activity and to gather information on wanted men. Most of those arrested are expected to be released soon.


HaRav Shteinman: "Everyone has an Obligation to Participate in Lev L'Achim"

At a special emergency meeting held last Friday afternoon in the home of HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, the Rosh Yeshiva told representatives of various bnei Torah kehillos in Bnei Brak, "Everyone has an obligation to participate in the activities of Lev L'Achim [by covering] the cost of enrolling at least one child in the Torah-based education [system]."

European Rabbinical Conference Opposes Setup of Dubious Beis Din in Germany

"We have heard repeated rumors that certain rabbonim intend to set up another beis din in Germany," reads a letter recently sent by European Rabbinical Conference heads, "a move that would undoubtedly undermine the authority of the beis din the European Rabbinical Conference set up in 5759 and would be liable to bring religious conditions in Germany back to a state of chaos, for every individual would be free to come forward and claim authority.

Grodno Grave Struggle

According to a report from the BBC, municipal authorities in Grodno, Belarus, are digging up the 300-year old local cemetery -- which was in use until 50 years ago -- to expand a football stadium. Jewish religious leaders from Britain claim that thousands of Jewish graves have been desecrated.

Israeli Interest Rate Reduced by 0.5 Percent

Despite heavy pressure to cut rates more, on Monday the Bank of Israel announced that its key interest rate for July would be 7.5 percent, only a 0.5 percent drop from the current rate of 8 percent.

Additional Cut in Income Support at End of Month

Zvi Goldstein Hy"d, 47, of Eli, was murdered and his parents and wife wounded, when a terrorist shot up their vehicle north of Ofra last Friday afternoon. The family was heading for Jerusalem to celebrate Shabbos sheva brochos with their son, David, who had been married the day before.

Suspend Interior Minister says Rabbi Gafni

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni told Yated Ne'eman last week that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon should suspend Interior Minister Avraham Poraz, based on suspicions that he voted twice during Knesset deliberations on the economic decrees, when several MKs were seen voting twice contrary to regulations and possibly against the law.
