European Rabbinical Conference Opposes Setup of Dubious Beis Din in Germany
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

"We have heard repeated rumors that certain rabbonim intend to set up another beis din in Germany," reads a letter recently sent by European Rabbinical Conference heads, "a move that would undoubtedly undermine the authority of the beis din the European Rabbinical Conference set up in 5759 and would be liable to bring religious conditions in Germany back to a state of chaos, for every individual would be free to come forward and claim authority. Therefore we consulted with the gedolei haposkim, and with his consent decided that any rabbi who is a Conference member would jeopardize his standing if he undertakes any action toward the setup of another beis din in Germany without written consent from the Conference President, the Chief Rabbi of France, Rav Yosef Sitruk, shlita, and that the Conference would not recognize any act made by a beis din in Germany or any other location in Continental Europe performed by an unauthorized beis din."

Several days ago the Conference rabbonim met with Maran HaRav Eliashiv to discuss issues concerning European Jewry.

According to a harsh letter sent to all of the rabbis of Europe, "In order to uphold the [Jewish] religion and to halt the hefkeirus prevailing in the state of Germany the European Rabbinical Conference set up a beis din in Germany in 5759 for gittin, geirus, verifying Jewish status and Choshen Mishpot [i.e. monetary matters]. Heading the beis din are London Av Beis Din Rav C. Ehrentrau and Paris Av Beis Din Rav N. Rebibo."

Signed by Rav Sitruk, Rav Ehrentrau and Conference Director- General Rav Moshe Rose, the letter expresses confidence that "European Rabbinical Conference members will not lend a hand to any plan not aimed at strengthening the beis din set up by the Conference."
