Bomb Smuggled Inside Quran
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M Plaut

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday that the two British bombers involved in the bombing of Mike's Bar in Tel Aviv last week entered the territories via the Allenby Bridge. They brought in their explosives hidden in a copy of the Quran, the central book of the Islamic religion. The explosives were especially compact, and of a kind that is unknown in the Palestinian Authority areas, and it is speculated that is why they were not detected.

Severe Blow to Yeshiva, Kollel and Religious Services Budgets
by Eliezer Rauchberger

The new, 462-page economic plan contains hundreds of laws that reduce the national budget by a total of NIS 11 billion ($2.4 billion). The first half of the budget slashing received Knesset Finance Committee approval early last week (which is all it needed to take effect) and two days later the second half (which required Knesset action) passed a first reading in the Knesset.

United Chareidi List for Upcoming Jerusalem Elections
by Betzalel Kahn

In a spirit of unity among Torah-true Jews in Jerusalem, the candidate list for United Torah Jewry-Agudas Yisroel-Degel HaTorah (UTJ) was submitted last week in advance of municipal elections scheduled for 3 Sivan. Heading the list is Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupolianski, who also presented his candidacy for the mayor's office.

Dollar Falls Below NIS 4.5 Against Shekel
by M Plaut

The dollar continued its fall against the shekel early Monday, falling to NIS 4.47 in interbank trading. Altogether, in the past two months the shekel has appreciated 9.2 percent against the dollar. These rapid fluctuations are often a symptom of an economy in transition. Some observers say that it may fall as low as NIS 4.4.

700 May be Fired from Chinuch Atzmai
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Ministry of Education ordered the Chinuch Atzmai to cut 8,000 hours of instruction. As a result, the system may be forced to let go as many as 700 teachers throughout the country. This was announced by Rabbi Meir Luria and Rabbi Avrohom Yosef Lazerson, the two heads of the Chinuch Atzmai.

Secular Photographer Tries to Capture Siren Violators on Film
by A. Cohen

A sharp verbal dispute erupted on Holocaust Remembrance Day last week in Bnei Brak when a secular newspaper photographer came to try to film local pedestrians walking during the siren. Many chareidim feel that observing a period of silence is a non-Jewish way to honor the dead and that they prefer to show their respect in other ways. However in recent years most chareidim who are in public places when the sirens are sounded remain still.

Efforts to Raise Awareness of Sanctity at Kosel Hamaaravi
by Betzalel Kahn

New signs have been posted at the Western Wall Plaza asking visitors to preserve the sanctity of the site by dressing moderately and appropriately, turning off cell phones and refraining from conversation or other noise that could disturb prayers.

Treatment of Allergies Prevents Complications and Asthma
by N. Katzin

A large percentage of seasonal allergy victims suffer from allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing, shortness of breath and runny nose. "The treatment of seasonal allergies is known to be highly important, not only because it eases symptoms but also in order to prevent complications and the development of diseases such as asthma and sinusitis," says Dr. Shlomo Bar Sela, a top allergist and director of Kupat Cholim Meuchedet's allergy clinic in Jerusalem.

Measles Outbreak in Jerusalem

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising -- Secular Symbol of Jewish Success

The uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto against the Nazis which began on April 29, 1943 and lasted about a month, just over sixty years ago, is used by secular Jews as a sign and a symbol of what they want to remember: an act of physical heroism and resistance against an overwhelmingly stronger force that managed to hold out and inflict losses on the Nazi forces.

Additional Luach Information

Ta'anis Sheini Kamma falls on Monday, 10 Iyar (May 12) and Ta'anis Chamishi falls on Thursday, 13 Iyar (May 15).

Pesach Sheini falls on Friday, 14 Iyar (May 16). Tachanun is not said and the minhag is to eat matzos during this day. The Chida writes that we should increase our simchah on Pesach Sheini since it is kodosh to Hashem.

From the eve of 12 Iyar (the night between May 13th and 14th) even if someone is doubtful whether he mentioned morid hatal in Shemoneh Esrei he does not need to repeat the Shemoneh Esrei.

On Thursday night, the eve of 14 Iyar (the night between May 15th and 16th) will be a full lunar eclipse. In England and Europe the eclipse will be evident during the whole night but in Eretz Yisroel the eclipse will only be evident from 4:00 AM until sunrise.
