Degel HaTorah Plans for Local Elections
by A. Cohen

The Degel HaTorah secretariat held a special meeting at the Degel HaTorah Building in Bnei Brak to discuss the movement's preparations for the local authorities' elections, including candidate lists that must be submitted by the 27th of Elul. All of the members of the secretariat participated in the meeting due to the importance of the matter, as municipal elections approach.

The meeting opened with a presentation of the important cities Degel HaTorah is vying for as part of the United Torah Jewry ticket. Highlighted places include Ofakim, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Or Yehuda, Azor, Be'er Yaakov, Beit She'an, Beit Shemesh, Bat Yam, Gedera, Gan Yavneh, Ganei Tikva, Dimona, Hod Hasharon, Herzliya, Chadera, Chatzor, Tiberius, Yokneam Illit, Yavneh, Yeruchom, Kfar Saba, Nehariya, Netivot, Arad, Afula, Petach Tikva, Tzfat, Kiryat Ata, Kiryat Gat, Rosh HaAyin, Rishon Letzion, Rechovot, Rechasim, Ramat Gan, Ramat Hasharon, Raanana, Sderot and Tel Aviv. The secretariat was also presented with the lists of UTJ candidates.

All of the speakers noted that every effort must be made to foster cooperation among all UTJ candidates in order to sanctify Shem Shomayim by walking in unity and common consent as in the past. As an example speakers cited the city of Bnei Brak, whose mayor Rabbi Mordechai Karelitz was chosen with the agreement of all the gedolei Yisroel from all streams and communities of origin. This way of selecting a candidate brought a great kiddush Shem Shomayim and the success of the joint list for the City of Bnei Brak, which won an unprecedented 18 mandates.
