Ashkavtei DeRebbi -- The Levaya

On Thursday night, 16 Marcheshvon, a heavy pall of mourning enveloped all sectors of Torah Jewry in Eretz Yisroel and abroad, as it was learned that Maran HaGaon Hagodol HaRav Elozor Menachem Mann Shach, ztvk"l, rosh yeshiva of the Ponevezh yeshiva, returned his pure soul to its Maker. Maran was Rosh Kol Bnei Hagolah, Am Yisroel's helmsman and one of the remnants of Knesses Hagedolah. He is deeply mourned by the entire Jewish people, and in particular by his many students who loved and esteemed him as their beacon of light.

His Biography

HaRav Shach was born to Rav Ezriel zt"l and Bat Sheva of the Levitan family, a family of talmidei chachomim who served as rabbonim in important Lithuanian communities. Her brother was HaRav Nisan Levitan zt"l, who became one of the most senior figures in Agudas HaRabbonim of America.

We have become orphans; our father is gone!

We have been virtual orphans for the past few years. The Rosh Yeshiva did not want to speak or to lead; he remained closed up within himself. But our father was still at home. Now we have reached the stage where "our father is gone." Our father has been taken away.

Police Force at HaRav Shach's Levaya: Bnei Brak Closed to Traffic

A large contingent of police stood guard on Friday at all of Bnei Brak's entrances and on the streets where the levaya's massive throng of participants passed by. According to police estimates hundreds of thousands participated in the levaya of Maran Rosh Hayeshiva, ztvk'l. The estimate broadcast over the radio was 400,000 participants.

At the end of a prolonged battle, in the course of which the Kav Mehadrin bus line was launched, Egged and Dan began operating bus route number 402 between Jerusalem and Bnei Brak. Now that the Transportation Ministry has granted it the necessary permits, the line began running this Sunday, 11 Cheshvan (October 28).
