Police Force at HaRav Shach's Levaya: Bnei Brak Closed to Traffic
by Betzalel Kahn

A large contingent of police stood guard on Friday at all of Bnei Brak's entrances and on the streets where the levaya's massive throng of participants passed by. According to police estimates hundreds of thousands participated in the levaya of Maran Rosh Hayeshiva, ztvk'l. The estimate broadcast over the radio was 400,000 participants.

The Yarkon Police Precinct started strategic planning for the levaya upon hearing of the passing of Maran Rosh Hayeshiva, ztvk'l. Together with the Municipality of Bnei Brak, they began preparing security arrangements for the levaya and traffic coordination within and outside of Bnei Brak.

Hundreds of police officers were stationed along all of Bnei Brak's entrances on Friday, from the morning onward. Police barricades were erected at all of the city's entrances. Starting from 8 AM the city's entrances were completely sealed off to everyone, with the exception of gedolei haTorah and emergency medical personnel.

The drivers of the gedolei Yisroel who requested permission to arrive by car to the Ponevezh Yeshiva or to the actual levaya, and afterwards to the cemetery, were given police escorts in order to clear the way for their automobiles.

Police noted the Bnei Brak municipality's cooperation, together with other officials, in all aspects of traffic arrangements during the levaya. They also praised the levaya's participants who obeyed the directions of the police, as needed.

Several helicopters hovered over the throngs of participants as part of the city's security efforts. The helicopter observed developments. This was in addition to the tens of police vans and motorcyclists that converged on practically every street corner of Bnei Brak.
