Libyan Jews Demand Berlusconi Compensate Them for WWII Suffering

Following Italy's recent agreement to provide Libya $5 billion to compensate for decades of colonial occupation, Libyan Jews are also demanding that Libya recognize the suffering they underwent during the German-Italian occupation of their country during World War II and grant them reparations for oppression and property loss.

Farmers Honored at Gathering to Mark End of Shmittah Year

With joy over the completion of a mitzvah, thousands of Shmittah-observant farmers gathered for a large event held in their honor in Netivot, where gedolei Yisroel expressed their admiration for the farmers who left their fields and orchards standing to fulfill the mitzvah of Shmittah in accordance with halochoh.

Substantial Rise in Enrollment at Chareidi Schools in Petach Tikva

The opening of the 5769 school year was a great success at all Torah-based institutions in Petach Tikva. Enrollment has increased 10 percent to 12,000 students, including 3,000 at the outreach schools alone. New kindergartens, day-care centers and infant-care centers have also been opened for the bnei Torah community and working mothers.


MK Gafni Thwarts Attempt to Open Food Bar at Sdeh Dov

Another attempt by the board of Tel Aviv's Dov Airfield to open its food bar on Shabbos and Jewish holidays has failed. In a letter to the operator of the food bar the airport director asked about his willingness to operate the food bar on Shabbos and holidays, saying if he receives a negative response the board would have to look into "alternative arrangements to provide service for passengers."

Education Ministry Shortens Trips to Poland by Two Days

In a move intended to lower the cost of trips for 11th grade students to the concentration camps in Poland the Education Ministry decided to shorten the trips by 2-3 days and to increase the financial-assistance budget from NIS 1 million to NIS 5 million based on recommendations by a special committee of inquiry.

HaRav Yechiel Fischel Eisenbach zt"l

A large gathering including many prominent figures was on hand on Thursday night, 5 Elul, to lay to rest HaRav Yechiel Fischel Eisenbach zt"l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Shaar Hashomayim, who returned his soul to his Maker at the age of 83. He was among the leading Kabboloh scholars of his generation and a marbitz Torah in esoteric studies who taught thousands of students.
