Keep Smiling

Short inspirational pieces by Avrohom Tzvi Schwartz, Kiryat Sefer, author of A Handful of Light, Hearts on Fire and other works on Mussar and Hashkofa

Puzzling It Out

We do not throw away the pieces of a puzzle -- even the dull, difficult ones. For without them, the picture is incomplete. Moreover, the dark ugly pieces highlight the beautiful pieces. They create a background on which the good pieces stand. They show off the good pieces for through them, that which is pleasant becomes glorious and stunning.

Similarly, we do not reject that which is unpleasant or ugly in our lives. We need, somehow, to make sense of it, to slot it into a space only it can fill. Not only must we take care of what is uncomfortable, not only must we use it, but we must also find pleasure in it. If we cannot find the right slot for this element, we must look again. The slot is there, and if we search for it, we will see it.

Nothing needs to be unpleasant, ever. We need to look at the unpleasant and ugly as our friend, our helper -- a gift from Hashem. Then we become the richer.
