Gedolei Yisroel Again Protest the "News Lines"

by Yechiel Sever

The leading gedolei Yisroel have called the public attention again to the serious public nuisance of the News Lines, which are replete with loshon hora, gossip mongering and outright lies, defamation, quarrel mongering and shameful low level chatter which are ruining the souls of our young generation.

A delegation of rabbonim headed by HaRav Shlomo Zalman Ulman, motz in the Beis Din of HaRav Wosner, and HaRav Moshe Mordechai Karp, rabbi of the Northern Giva of Modi'in Illit, described to gedolei Yisroel the harmful ramifications and educational damage caused by these `news' lines which are run by disreputable people, in brazen defiance of Torah leadership.

The group of gedolei Yisroel ordered a second printing of their letter of protest dated Kislev, 5771, written by past and present Torah leaders, in which they came out against the terrible stumbling block of the News Lines. The letter states: "It is known that the telephone and cell phone broadcasts are dangerous obstacles leading to various sins. These news services and News Lines have been banned and blocked because of their foul mouthing and misguided views, to say nothing of the bitul Torah and waste of time they generate, as has been pointed out by heads of yeshivos and kollelim.

"Therefore, each person must see to it that his phone is connected via a `clean' filtering service provided by Bezek (Kav Venoki) and similar companies which block unwanted access and are certified by the involved Committee in order to protect one's family from pitfalls and trials, lest the results be felt for all generations to come."
