The Kinneret Awaits the Winter Rains

by Y Sheinfeld

As we stand on the verge of asking for rain, the Kinneret stands at 212.35 meters below sea level, which is .65 meters above the lower red line. A year ago the Kinneret was 213.46 meters below sea level, 1.11 meters below its level now. Generally the level continues to fall even after the first serious rains, until the accumulated precipitation brings strong flows.

The water management authorities are trying to ease the drain on the Kinneret by increasing the reliance on desalination and other sources. The Kinneret spent parts of the last five years below the lower red line until last winter's rains brought a welcome change.
