Representatives of UTJ Clarify: No Compromise on Yeshiva Student Status

By Yechiel Sever

The UTJ MKs categorically declared to spokesmen from HaLikud Beiteinu in a meeting this past Monday, that per instructions from Torah leadership, there will be no compromise on the subject of military draft for yeshiva students.

The UTJ representatives, Rabbis Moshe Gafni, Uri Maklev and Yaakov Asher, met prior to that overture in the home of HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman to receive clear-cut guidelines regarding the fundamental immutable issues which brooked no leeway and which called for an adamant stand in coalition talks.

HaRav Shteinman ordered them to broach the subject and to inform them in no uncertain terms that Torah students must be allowed to continue to study undisturbed, as they have to date, and that no change will be brooked. He then blessed the representatives that they be loyal messengers to maintain vigil and preserve the sanctity of the yeshivos so that their students continue to rise spiritually within the yeshiva walls without interference, and that the benches therein [and their student population] continue to increase.
