"One Cannot Rely On Oneself but is Obligated to Sever Himself from Internet Which Has Felled Many Victims"

By A. Cohen

A delegation from the Severance from Internet Gemach together with HaRav Binyomin Finkel, who has been guiding its heads, met this past Monday at the home of HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, where they received support for the expansion of their blessed activities in creating dozens of new headquarters throughout the country.

HaRav Shteinman blessed their vital activities, declaring that every single person is obligated to flee the temptation of Internet and not rely on himself since, regretfully, it has felled so many victims. He quoted the gemara on the verse, "Man and beast does Hashem save," which explains that "these are the people who are very intelligent, yet [do not rely on their intellect but] act simplistically like an animal." This statement means that a person should always bear in mind the inborn animalistic tendencies that pull him towards materialism, and be on his guard against enticements and flee from sin.

He also quoted the Choftetz Chaim's parable about the wagonner who trusted his horse to travel the well known road to his destination, only to find himself drowning in a river. In like manner, one should not trust himself with regards to his animalistic instincts. The Rosh Yeshiva was skeptical regarding people who fear the negligible loss of money etc. in contrast to a loss of days of life, as was said, "A man is concerned over the loss of money, but not concerned over the loss of days."
