Court Says Shmittah "Heter Mechirah" Land Sale Legally Invalid

In a decision handed down by the Petach Tikva District Court this week, the judges stated, "The sale of land shortly before the Shmittah year is done for only one reason: to fulfill the mitzvah of Shmittah. It should not be concluded from a sale for this purpose that the seller lost all of his rights from any standpoint."


Chemistry Professor Caught Sabotaging Jerusalem Eruv

In a show of protest on Shabbos night, Parshas Yisro, dozens of residents from Beit Vegan and other Jerusalem neighborhoods walked to Kiryat Yovel to patrol the eruv, following instructions by rabbonim. For the first time the eruv saboteurs were caught red-handed.


Third Anniversary of Halimi Murder; French Jews Feeling Isolated

Paris recently marked the third anniversary of the murder of 23-year-old Ilan Halimi, who was kidnapped and tortured in a basement for three weeks. The trial for the gang of kidnappers and the killer has not yet begun. French justice officials appear to be waiting for a letup in antisemitic attacks in the streets and Metro system in Arab suburbs in order to portray the brutal incident as an event from a bygone era. Yet antisemitic attacks keep coming, one after the next.


Antisemitic Hostility Toward French Foreign Minister

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner is fighting a losing battle to clear his name following the publication of a book that accuses him of serving African dictators for pay and that suggests he serves American and Israeli interests rather than French interests.
