Can I — Should I?

Not so long ago, we received an indignant letter from a reader. We had written that doing something was prohibited but he had asked Rav X if he could do it, and Rav X said that he could.

Rosh Chodesh: A Yom Tov — But Why?
By HaRav Tzvi Weisfish

Part II

In the first part, HaRav Weisfish noted that a difference between Klal Yisroel and the nations of the world is that we use a lunar calendar and they use a solar calendar. "The sun and the moon can be said to represent these two opposing viewpoints. The sun is constant and unchanging. . . . Its fixed path symbolizes the nations' belief that the world has always existed and that nothing new is ever introduced by a higher guiding Hand. The moon, on the other hand, is constantly changing.

Additional Luach Information

n erev Pesach (Shabbos) one can eat chometz only until the end of the zman achilas chometz.

Because erev Pesach falls this year on Shabbos, on Thursday, 12 Nissan (Apr. 22) is the fast of the firstborn - Ta'anis Bechoros.

On Thursday night, the eve of 13 Nissan (Apr. 21) is the search for chometz - bedikas chometz, and the chometz is burnt the next morning, Friday, 13 Nissan (Apr. 22) until the end of the zman sereifas chometz.

The minhag is for the Mora DeAsra to say a deroshah on Shabbos HaGodol to inform the community of the numerous halochos of matzoh and chometz and many read part of the Haggodoh after Minchah.
