Rabbi MK Eichler Makes Way for Rabbi Shmuel Halpert as Part of Rotation Agreement

By Eliezer Rauchberger

MK Rabbi Yisroel Eichler (Agudas Yisroel) submitted a letter of resignation to Knesset Chairman Reuven Rivlin on Monday night based on the UTJ rotation agreement signed prior to the last Knesset elections.

He will be replaced by Rabbi Shmuel Halpert, who was sixth on the party list. Rabbi Halpert will become a Knesset member Wednesday night, 48 hours after Rabbi Eichler submitted his letter of resignation, but he is not expected to make his pledge of loyalty until Monday.

With his resignation from the Knesset, Rabbi Eichler is also vacating the post of chairman of the Committee for Public Inquiries. According to the coalition agreement between UTJ and the Likud, the committee chairmanship will remain in the hands of UTJ, which will have to decide who to assign to the post.
