another NIS 10-billion cut in the second phase. Experts say

PA Chooses Prime Minister; Hamas Threatens Israeli Leaders
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M Plaut
On Monday the Palestinian Legislative Council chose Mahmoud
Abbas (also known as Abu Mazen) as the prime minister of the
Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian parliament granted day-
to-day responsibility for Palestinian affairs to the prime
minister, but left ultimate authority over the security
services, negotiations with Israel, and other matters firmly
in the hands of Yasser Arafat. Still, the prime minister's
precise powers were left vague enough so that the first
holder of the job will be able to define and develop them in
practice.

World
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Yeshivas Mordechai Hatzaddik needs little introduction, but
many people wonder who and what is behind the project, which
just may be the most successful idea for fostering Torah
learning since the Daf Yomi was begun by Rav Meir Shapira
some eighty years ago. To find some answers to this question
we interviewed Rav Naftoli Meir Falk, Rosh Yeshivas Mordechai
Hatzaddik.

Challenges of the Modern World: Purim Vanquishes Science
What is a cold world? It is a world of isolation and
disconnectedness, a world in which there is nothing that
connects different points in space nor different instants in
time. Everything is, but it might not be. You might be here
and you might not be here. Your friend might be here today
but gone tomorrow -- and for no reason. Whatever is gone, is
completely finished, dead and done with.

Amen -- A Small Word with Big Repercussions
"Open the gates and admit the righteous nation which remains
steadfast in its faith." Say Chazal, "Do not read `shomrei
emunim' but `sheomrim amen.' "
Just before the decree of annihilation was about to be
enacted, Mordechai gathered three hundred cheder children and
studied Torah with them. The pure `amens' uttered by pure
children can save worlds.
