Most Israeli Salt is Not Mevushal

To The Editor:

In our sefer Orchos Shabbos (I:49) we wrote that the fine salt sold in Israel commonly called "table salt" is mevushal. We recently found out that this is not true, and that we were falsely led to this conclusion by one of the workers at the salt factory in Atlit.

The truth is that only salt manufactured in the Dead Sea Works in Sdom is mevushal but that most of the salt sold in Israel is from the salt factory in Eilat. The salt there is not cooked in water but only dried with very hot air. According to this the salt should be considered salt that is not mevushal as far as the laws of Shabbos are concerned.
