Bali Bomber Meant to Murder "Americans and Jews"
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

A court sentenced a grinning motorcycle mechanic to death for plotting the Bali nightclub terror attack that killed 202 people last October. The man, 41, is a suspected member of the Islamic militant group Jemaah Islamiyah. Indonesian and American officials have said Jemaah Islamiyah was probably also responsible for the car-bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta two weeks ago that killed 16 people and wounded more than 150.

In interviews, the man said he wanted to be a martyr, and he mounted little defense during the trial. After the sentencing, a lawyer for the defendant said, "He doesn't have anything personal against the Australians, for instance. The targets were the Americans and the Jews."

Nearly half of those who died in the nightclub blast were Australians.
