AQUARIUMS
by Ruth Lewis

I'd been in Eretz Yisroel for three or four months,

when I suddenly noticed that

the stores had started selling aquariums.

Not very pretty ones, empty and rather plain --

some large, some small.

"Why are all the stores selling aquariums?"

I asked someone.

"Aquariums?" A puzzled frown.

"Yes. All those glass boxes everywhere,

edged with metal frames."

"Glass boxes edged with..? Oh!"

Laughter. "Those aren't aquariums!

Those are glass cases in which to put our

Chanukah menorahs!"

"Really? I never heard of that! You mean,

to keep them safe from children's hands?"

Another laugh. "To keep them safe from wind and rain!

You're in Yerushalayim now!

We light the flames outdoors for all to see!"

"Oh!"

Not aquariums.

But I began to feel

like a fish that's finally found the water,

just like a fish that's finally come home.
