Elad City Council Convenes for First Time
by A. Cohen

The Elad Municipal Council finally convened for its inaugural meeting on 18 Kislev. Although elections to the Council took place three months ago and the coalition -- composed of representatives of Shas, Beyachad and Mafdal -- was also formed at that time, this was the Council's first meeting.

At the meeting, led by Council Chairman Rabbi Tsuriel Krispal of Shas, members of the coalition approved the appointments for administrative tasks as well as membership in the various committees in line with the coalition agreement.

The City Council members approved the appointment of Rabbi Yaakov Asher, leader of the faction supported by Yated rabbonim called Beyachad, as deputy council head; Rabbi Eliyahu Ashval as deputy council head on behalf of Shas; and Shmuel Amruni, the Mafdal representative, as an additional deputy council head.

The Council also approved the appointment of Rabbi Yaakov Asher, head of the Beyachad list, as head of the Education and Culture Department and the City Betterment Department, which includes the infrastructure, maintenance and public works departments.

Within the coalition framework, the Council also approved the following appointments of representatives of the Beyachad slate: Rabbi Moshe Cohen as chairman of the Relief Committee and Rabbi Shmuel Grossman as chairman of the Comptroller Committee. In addition, the Beyachad list received representation in all council committees.

The Elad bnei Torah community has expressed its approval of the coalition agreement which was signed last week. It hopes that signing of this agreement will result in a new era in Elad, with all elected representatives harmoniously working together while displaying respect for every circle and sect, as befits a city of Torah.
