Rabbi Ravitz: We Must "Blackmail" for What Everyone Else Gets Automatically!
by E. Rauchberger and Yated Ne'eman Staff

"UTJ representatives must fight for what other citizens receive automatically. As a result of this, over the years people have begun to view us as extortionists. The image of a party which exploits chance political configurations [to "extort" the public] pursues us all the time.

For the first time in the history of the Knesset, its presidium has decided to reject a legal opinion of its own legal advisory office. They Celebrate New Year; We Keep Shabbos

Even in Israel, it was hard to escape the worldwide celebration of the Christian New Year. The fact that it took place on Shabbos made it less present than it would otherwise have been,...

Everyday Miracles
by C. L.

A Tehillim rally recently held in the Tamir Hotel was attended by hundreds of women. Aside from being inspired by the speeches delivered, we were deeply moved to be part of some fifty rounds of the complete Sefer Tehillim jointly said by the audience, rather, the participants -- for we did not only come to `hear' but to `be heard'.

Additional Luach Information:

The earliest time of Kiddush Levonoh -- Shevat

The time of Kiddush Levonoh everywhere in the world begins on Sunday night, the eve of 3 Shevat (Jan. 9, 2000), at 6:26 P.M., in Eretz Yisroel. In most of Europe the beginning time is at 5:26 P.M. but in northern Europe it is impossible to make a berochoh on Kiddush Levonoh at all that night because the moon sets before the earliest time, and their actual time is from the beginning of the next night, the eve of 4 Shevat. In America one can start making Kiddush Levonoh from the beginning of the night, the eve of 3 Shevat.

The astronomical new moon follows the molad this month by approximately two hours. Moreover, since during the three days after the molad the moon approaches its apogee (its highest point) and advances slowly, an additional regression in the moon's appearance takes place. Those who act according to the Chazon Ish and do not make a berochoh on the moon until it is big and high in the sky, should not make Kiddush Levonoh on the eve of 3 Shevat neither in Eretz Yisroel, most of Europe, nor in America.
