Bentching From a Siddur

To The Editor:

I remember that there was a period a few years ago when tragedies in which young men and women passed away happened one after the other. Some people asked Maran HaRav Shach, shlita, what they should do when such misfortunes take place. The Rosh Yeshiva prompted them to be careful to bench bircas hamozone while following inside a siddur. Maran's guidance was well publicized at the time.

Today we should again publicize this guidance once again, since lately we are suffering so many similar tragedies, Rachmono litzlan. We can not top the advice of gedolei hador. (See HaSaraf MiBrisk by S.M. Wallach, pg. 487, which cites that HaRav Yehoshua Leib Diskin [the Maharil Diskin] advised a woman who had become bereaved from her children to bench while looking inside a siddur. As a result, she did not lose any further children.) May we not experience any additional hardships and may all of Klal Yisroel have an eternal yeshuah, with Hashem's help.
