Inventor Donates MRI Machine to Ezra Umarpeh

by A. Cohen

On a recent visit to Israel, world-acclaimed scientist Raymond Damadian, M.D., inventor of the well-known MRI machine, announced the donation of a new, advanced MRI to the Ezra Umarpeh association headed by Rabbi Elimelech Firer.

The invention of the MRI 18 years ago effected a medical revolution. The device enables non-invasive, precision photography of internal parts of the body, allowing the collection of information on a scale and of a quality never before possible. Conditions may be detected that were hitherto hidden, and diagnoses may be made where before there was just guesswork. The device also enables surgeons to study precise pictures of the areas on which they need to operate before they begin surgery. Tens of millions of patients the world over have benefited from the MRI.

Dr. Damadian was in Israel to receive an honorary doctorate from Bar Ilan University. During his visit he asked to meet Rabbi Elimelech Firer, about whom he had heard so much. In their meeting last week along with medical professionals from Israel and abroad, the conversation focused on the MRI device and its development. Damadian expressed his admiration for the phenomenal work of Rabbi Firer and Ezra Umarpeh.

Dr. Damadian, along with Mr. Green, chairman of the Fonar Corporation which the two of them head, announced the donation of a new, advanced model of their MRI device to Ezra Umarpeh.
