Mass Funeral Procession for Sifrei Torah Burned in Vishnitz Shul

By L.S. Wasserman

A funeral procession was held Thursday, Erev Rosh Chodesh Marcheshvan, for sifrei Torah that were burned in a fire in the large Vishnitz beis medrash in Bnei Brak. The tragedy took place when a fire broke on Motzei Yom Tov Succos, leaving Jews everywhere stunned. The funeral will set out from the beis medrash and proceed towards the Vishnitz section of the Bnei Brak cemetery.

At a meeting of the Vishnitz Badatz, led by HaRav Yisroel Hager, the rabbonim called on Vishnitzer Chassidim to dedicate the day to tefilloh, teshuvoh and his'orerus, starting with a half-day fast, and continuing with a mass gathering and funeral procession to pay homage to the Torah.

The fire broke out when the electrical system inside the aron kodesh short-circuited. Valiant efforts were made to save the sifrei Torah from the suffocating smoke, but the raging flames prevailed.

Once the fire was extinguished the charred sifrei Torah were taken out. Eight sifrei Torah not fit to be read from had been destroyed, while others sustained partial damaged.
