Degel HaTorah and Agudas Yisroel Submit Joint UTJ List to Elections Committee

By Yechiel Sever

United Torah Judaism submitted a joint list comprised of Degel HaTorah and Agudas Yisroel representatives to the Elections Committee this week.

The list contains the following names in the indicated order: Rabbi Yaakov Litzman (AY), Rabbi Moshe Gafni (DHT), Rabbi Meir Porush (AY), Rabbi Uri Maklev (DHT), Rabbi Menachem Eliezer Moses (AY), Rabbi Yisroel Eichler (AY), Rabbi Menachem Carmel (DHT), Rabbi Yaakov Guterman (DHT), Rabbi Avraham Yosef Lazerson (AY) and Rabbi Shimon Haddad (DHT). If only six candidates win Knesset seats, in the middle of the term an Agudas Yisroel representative will resign to bring in Degel HaTorah representative Rabbi Menachem Carmel.

The Degel HaTorah executive board says that based on instructions from gedolei Yisroel shlita a decision was reached to form a joint list in order to avoid contention during the elections. At the same time and in consideration of the factions that make up Agudas Yisroel, Degel HaTorah will receive part of the equality it is entitled to by having representatives placed in the seventh and eighth slots based on a sense of responsibility to the public, which is Degel HaTorah's main motivation.

Unlike previous elections, a detailed agreement between Agudas Yisroel and Degel HaTorah was not drawn up. The only issues agreed on relate to positioning on the joint list and the rotation, whereas no arrangement has been formulated regarding government posts and other issues of daily affairs after the elections.
