Nazareth Illit Mayor Pushes Forward with Chareidi Development Plan

By L.S. Wasserman

Nazareth Illit Mayor Shimon Gepso said in a special interview conducted with him as his city prepares to build a large chareidi development using the many land reserves there, "The chareidi neighborhood will indeed be built, for the benefit of the entire population. I've chosen Modi'in Illit as a model to emulate."

"Modi'in Illit began just about 15 years ago," said Gepso. "Four of my brothers-in-law bought apartments there. When they showed it to me on paper, I laughed at them. Today it numbers some 50,000 people and every home built there is sold before they lay down the first block. Here it will be the same. I've chosen Modi'in Illit as a model to emulate," he said.

A plan for the construction of thousands of housing units is currently being advanced in Nazareth Illit's Har Yonah neighborhood. The Housing Ministry is working to obtain approval for the construction of 3,000 housing units, with a master plan calling for another 9,000 units in a later phase. The plan is going forward despite resistance from the opposition on the city council. "I alone decide the city's development policy," said the Mayor, "and therefore the chareidi neighborhood will indeed be built, for the benefit of the entire population."
