A large gathering of well-wishers, including many of the city's leading rabbonim and benefactors, were in attendance at the 25th anniversary dinner for Shaarei Torah school in Johannesburg last week. The theme of the evening was the celebration of a quarter of a century of excellence in Jewish education by Shaarei Torah, which has been one of the mainstays of Torah chinuch catering for the Johannesburg chareidi community since its inception.

The citizens of Helena, Montana, a relatively small town of about 66,000 in the north of the United States, voted in June 2002 to ban smoking in all public buildings -- including restaurants, bars and casinos. Soon after, doctors at the local hospital noticed that heart-attack admissions were dropping.

Australian Jewry is mourning the death this week of one of its leading rabbis. Rabbi Chaim Gutnick, the president of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) and former longstanding rabbi at Elwood Hebrew Congregation, died on Shabbos at approximately 6.30 pm from a stroke at the age of 82.

Mr. Mordechai Rosenbaum z"l aged 57, of Melbourne, Australia, passed away tragically on Sunday 30 Tishrei-26 October, on the day of his youngest daughter's chuppah.
