Stretch to Get Stronger
by Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D.

Stretching has always been the odd man out in the world of resistance training. When it comes to building strength, many people are willing to do just about anything.

Spend NIS 150 for a one month supply of the newest supplements that may increase your strength? No problem. Spend an additional 15 minutes stretching after weight conditioning? Forget it. After all, is being able to touch your toes really going to make you stronger?

Yes. According to recent studies, stretching does make you stronger. In one 10-week study, the 153 subjects showed gains in strength due to the effects of strength training and stretching. The subjects who followed their workout program with a separate stretching session showed the greatest stretch gains -- a 54 percent increase. Subjects who stretched after each exercise showed a 37 percent strength increase while subjects who did not stretch at all had a 29 percent increase in strength. So learn how to stretch to make you stronger and more flexible for everyday life.
