First Yahrtzeit of Maran HaRav Shach, zt"l
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

In his tzavo'oh, HaRav Shach requested "of all the talmidim who benefited from me, whether in Torah, yiras Hashem or in midos, that they do chessed for me by learning for my neshomoh even one mishna, or one mussar thought, for I was moser nefesh for their success." HaRav Shach concluded with the promise that "If it will be possible for me to do so, I will do what I can and speak on your behalf [in Shomayim]." The words of the tzavo'oh were inscribed onto the matzeva.

This year, on HaRav Shach's first yahrtzeit, the 16th of Cheshvan, the same communities that mourned his death one year ago will endeavor to create an aliyas neshomoh for him through a series of assifos and kinussim dedicated to divrei Torah and his'orerus.

Dozens of commemorative events have been planned in Eretz Yisroel and the United States, as well as in many countries throughout the world. In Yerushalayim, an event graced by the presence of HaRav Yosef Shalom Eliashiv shlita and leading roshei yeshiva and talmidei chachomim will draw an estimated 10,000 people. Events of a similar nature will be held in Bnei Brak, Kiryat Sefer, Elad; New York and Lakewood; and in Paris. Educational institutions have planned around-the-clock Torah learning throughout the day, and tens of thousands of people are expected at the kever in Bnei Brak.

A public tefilloh session will be held in the early afternoon just outside the cemetery in Bnei Brak, and it is expected that many tens of thousands will attend. The event will be graced by HaRav Meir Tzvi Bergman, HaRav Shach's son- in-law, and it will be followed by a hachnosas sefer Torah in HaRav Bergman's Yeshivas Rashbi.

The tzibbur is urged to honor HaRav Shach's memory by participating in the events being organized by their communities.
