UTJ Launches Jerusalem Election Campaign
by Betzalel Kahn

"A limited number of work days still remain to the fateful election on 3 Sivan. We must prove the chareidi sector has the power to prevent the looming shadows of the government decrees from entering the gates of the City of Jerusalem," announced the United Torah Jewry election staff in a call intended to jolt the Jerusalem public out of its apathy.

According to the written notice the only way to accomplish the pressing goal of saving the holy city of Jerusalem from the hands of Judaism's persecutors and to achieve the success needed to act through the City Council to meet the demands and aspirations of the chareidi public, is through a massive public effort to increase support for the UTJ City Council list.

The election staff is calling on the public not to wait until the final week before the elections, but to begin setting all of its power into motion immediately in order to save the election campaign by stirring people's hearts for the sake of the chareidi list, which will shoulder the task of battling for the future Jewish character of the Holy City.

"Without strong, broad-based representation with the power to influence and sway, its voice will be like a `voice crying out in the wilderness,'" say UTJ election staff heads. "The government's decrees harm us in the halls of Torah, the holy yeshivas and the kollelei avreichim, which face painful financial cuts. We must mobilize for the elections, starting now."

UTJ's City Council members shoulder the burden of setting policy on a range of issues close to the heart of the observant public--from safeguarding the walls of Shabbos in the city to preserving the city's Jewish character, establishing chareidi religious facilities and increasing support for the construction of Torah and chesed institutions in Jerusalem. Meanwhile they must confront [opponents of religion] seeking to destroy the city's spiritual identity, to bring abominations into the city, to sell chometz openly and to disrupt Jewish religious life founded on purity and sanctity, chas vesholom.

In light of these prodigious challenges a widespread awakening has taken place. The public is rallying to assist in the difficult campaign for the sanctity of Jerusalem, but election staff heads note a massive public awakening is needed in order to promote the City Council list and maximize representation.

On Sunday the Central Election Staff, based at Har Chotzvim, opened all of the city's 40 local and neighborhood bureaus, launching three weeks of official activity leading up to UTJ's hoped for victory in Jerusalem.
