Departing Citizens Need Passports
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

In a definite policy change that has disrupted travel plans of many people, the Israeli authorities decided, as of May 1, to enforce the long-standing regulation that anyone who can get an Israeli passport must do so in order to leave the country.

Those holding dual citizenship, for example, often keep the passport of their non-Israeli country because it makes it easier to travel elsewhere. An Israeli passport is superfluous for them outside of Israel. For many years such travelers did not bother to get an Israeli passport and the Israeli border control authorities let them enter and leave with no difficulty.

As of May 1, this is no longer the case. Those arriving at the airport without a valid passport are turned back, regardless of their airline reservations and travel plans.
