Sharon Fires Shas and UTJ as His Budget Plan Fails in Knesset

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon fired four out of five cabinet ministers as well as five deputy ministers from Shas and the two deputy ministers from United Torah Judaism after both parties voted Monday night against the government's budget plan in the Knesset, which lost 47-44. The firings go into effect in 48 hours leaving time for negotiations which will probably not be concluded until close to the deadline if at all.

Treasury Removes Objections to Funds with Rabbinical Advisors

Despite its initial objections to the establishment of mutual funds managed according to halocho and overseen by rabbonim, the Finance Ministry has now backtracked following a parliamentary question tabled by MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni in the Knesset. In response, Deputy Finance Minister Yitzhak Cohen (Shas) then called a meeting in his office and the matter is to be arranged soon.

Luna Grand Park in Haifa Shuts Down

After opening five months ago with declarations that it would operate seven days a week, the $8 million-dollar Luna Grand Park recently announced it would be closing altogether due to low attendance. Rav Moshe Rauchberger, chairman of the Religious Council's Committee for the Shabbos said the public did a kiddush Hashem by adhering to calls from rabbonim to boycott the site, leading to its complete closure.

HaRav Zalman Rotberg zt"l

This past Sunday, 8 Sivan, tens of thousands of bnei Torah accompanied the great gaon HaRav Zalman Rotberg zt"l on his last earthly journey. HaRav Zalman Rotberg was the rosh yeshiva of the Beis Meir yeshiva, and a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Degel Hatorah. A talmid of the European gedolei Torah, he was 89 at the time of his petiroh.

The Great Gaon, HaRav Pesach Yitzchok Stein

On Sunday 1 Sivan and Monday 2 Sivan, thousands of mourners, headed by gedolei haTorah, roshei yeshiva and masses of students and members of the bnei Torah community, accompanied HaRav Pesach Yitzchok Stein zt"l on his last earthly journey. On Sunday, the levaya took place in the United States and on Monday in Eretz Yisroel. HaRav Stein, one of the roshei yeshiva of the Telz yeshiva of Cleveland, was niftar on erev Shabbos kodesh parshas Bamidbar.

New Ateres Yisroel Yeshiva Ketana in Elad

Yeshivas Ateres Yisroel, located in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of Jerusalem, has taken another step to promote its niche in the new religious city of Elad. After developing its new Ramat Meir neighborhood of Elad for alumni, and a kollel, it is preparing for the opening of its Ateres Yisroel Yeshiva Ketana branch this coming Elul.
