Magen Prize to Rav Chananiah Cholek of Ezer Mitzion
by A. Cohen

The Magen Prize for the promotion of volunteerism in Israel and for exemplary volunteer work was given to Rav Chananiah Cholek the chairman and founder of Ezer Mitzion. The prize was awarded at an impressive ceremony which took place on Tuesday, 8 Kislev, in the Sun Hotel in Bat Yam. It was attended by many top ranking public figures.

The chairman of the awards committee, Mrs. Yitzchak Alfasi, noted that many applications for the award were filed with the committee. The choice of Rav Cholek, she said, stemmed from the fact that he is the founder, the director and the life-force of the Ezer Mitzion voluntary organization which, since its founding more than twenty years ago, has become one of the leading voluntary organizations in Israel. Recognized by both the public and the government, Ezer Mitzion is a model for many other voluntary organizations.

"The organization, which today numbers nearly 10,000 volunteers in about 40 branches and activity centers, is directed by Rav Chananiah Cholek, in a thorough, meticulous manner, and with untold mesiras nefesh. Rav Cholek serves as a personal example of uncompromising aspiration for excellence in volunteerism in every aspect of the activity of his organization. At all times, he is attentive to the feelings of his fellow in distress, and makes all-out efforts to improve the quality of the service, to develop new channels of activity, and to find solutions to all of the special needs."

Rav Cholek thanked the members of the committee. "We are currently in a time of cheshbon hanefesh for the klal and the individual Jew," Rav Cholek said. "Many sick and elderly are in great distress. The security situation is difficult too. The love of one's fellow and the spirit of volunteerism are what unite the entire Jewish Nation and contribute to its endurance and ability to withstand duress." At the end of his speech, Rav Cholek thanked the thousands of dedicated volunteers in all the various branches of Ezer Mitzion, who make all-out efforts to ease the plights of the ailing and the suffering in every possible way.
