HaRav Ephraim Oshry Visits the Torah Institutions of Antwerp

by S. Fried

A student of the Chofetz Chaim and one of the illustrious gedolim of Lithuania, the elderly gaon, HaRav Ephraim Oshry, formerly an av beis din of Kovna and currently a rov on the Lower East Side, was warmly welcomed and honored in the Belzer beis hamedrash in Antwerp.

HaRav Oshry, who arrived in Antwerp for a family simcha, visited the institutions of the city's large Belzer network. He was accompanied by the heads of the Belzer institutions and their director general, Rabbi Dovid Galitzki. In a special conversation with the heads and the directors of the Belzer institutions, the illustrious guest said that he was very impressed by the high educational level of the Belzer institutions. "The fruits of the chinuch accorded the students of the Belzer institutions throughout the world are renown for their excellence," the gaon, whose grandchildren study in Belzer institutions, stressed. He also blessed all those involved in the sacred labor of chinuch in these institutions.

During his stay in the city, HaRav Oshry gave many shiurim for hundreds who came to hear him. HaRav Oshry, who is famous in the Torah world for Sha'alos Uteshuvos MiMaamakim, which he composed in the ghetto during the war years based on the questions he faced then, received many delegations of talmidei chachomim and public figures who had came to bask in the light of his Torah. He also visited the other Torah institutions in the city, and met with the rabbonim, with whom he deliberated on pertinent topics.
