In the wake of the recent deaths of infants left in closed
cars, Dr. Yosef Laks, Director of the Kupat Cholim Klalit
Child Health Center in Ramat Aviv, has issued the following
warnings:
1. Infants and children must not be left even briefly in
closed places such as cars without adult supervision.
2. When a child waits in a car with an adult, either the
windows should be left open or the air-conditioner should be
running.
3. When an adult waits in a car with a child, the car should
be parked in the shade.
4. A sufficient supply of water or other beverage should
always be on hand in the car.
5. Attention should be paid to the following symptoms at any
time in the heat (not just in parked cars): the failure to
pass urine for more than 6 hours, apathy, dryness of the
tongue, nausea and vomiting. Upon appearance of any of these
symptoms, which might be indicative of sunstroke or
dehydration, the child should be brought for an urgent
medical examination.
