The story that is kept quiet is the testimony of the Attorney General at the time the charges were filed against Netanyahu. That itself is a scandal. What has become clear this week and last week is crazy. Everything that since 2019 has cast Israel into an unending series of elections and crisis after crisis, is exposed as nothing more than hot air. A blown up bubble.
Journalist Motti Tuchfeld summarizes the testimony of Avichai Mandelblit: "Mandelblit stands in the witness box and admits, word after word, what any reasonable observer has long seen: there is nothing there. File 4000 collapsed completely. File 2000 also collapsed. File 1000 is a bad joke about cigars. All of the serious charges evaporated.
"But what is more serious — and this is not reported in any place — is the lawlessness of the police, the prosecution and the Attorney General himself. It is a serious corruption of the investigation. Illegal pressure brought on witnesses. Illegal procedures. Deliberate leaks. Documents that disappeared.
"Suddenly, when Mandelblit speaks, all are silent. Where did they go? From months, day after day, the lies of the prosecution filled the media. They reported all the fake details thoroughly. Suddenly they disappeared. Absolute silence.
"The truth is uncomfortable and does not fit with the narrative. What toppled Netanyahu in 2017 when the investigations began, all of those dramatic headlines about bribery and fraud — are exposed as one big bluff that was born in those illegal investigation rooms.
"How pathetic is the declared plan of the opposition to pass a 'Law of the Accused' that will prohibit the president of Israel from asking someone against whom there is a serious charge. Even if we ignore the transparent attempt to foil the will of the voters through the courts, what accusations are they talking about? They are accusations that collapsed in court, one after the other! Over thing like this they want to condition the prohibition? These are the ones who constantly wave democratic values in our faces. There is no greater hypocrisy than this."
Whoever believes that the current Attorney General or the High Court would stop this, is living in a dream world.
