In the course of the discussion which took place at the High Court titled, "Contempt of the court," one of the attorneys representing the petitioners inadvertently revealed the real reason behind the petition. While the judges were conferring among themselves, the microphone of the lawyer representing one of the petitioners remained open for a few seconds, during which he was heard gloating in glee to his colleagues, "We are going to destroy the entire Torah world to pieces."
Not a word about "sharing the burden," nothing about the lack of manpower in the army, nor even any mention of the melding power of the army melting pot, but pure and forthrightly: "to rip apart the Torah world." This is really the one and only goal.
Not a single Jew fell off his chair. Not a single chareidi Jew lifted an eyebrow in surprise. The speaker did not 'discover America.' We know full well that this is the sole objective and none other. That, to the people of the Leftist camp, who also assault the army morning and eve, and every attempt to bend it a bit to the right, arouses them to abuse and debase it — the very last thing they want is to see in the army is authentic chareidim, fervent in their belief, suffused with motivation, who are yet capable of swaying the National Religious devotees who are accused of the harshest charge which the Left is capable of imputing on anyone in the State of Israel, which is 'Messianic leanings.'
There are enough soldiers in the army infused with Messianic motivation who declare full voice: "I believe in the coming of Moshiach," and surely do not lack more soldiers of the same ilk, and perhaps those even 'worse.'
Just take a look at what happened to the fighters of the division Netzach Yehuda which the army terms as a chareidi division, even though it has nothing close to chareidim of any kind whatsoever. And so, when the soldiers were faced with foreign reporters who came to survey the security conditions of an illegal settlement, one of the soldiers — and we stress only one! — said to the newsmen that "all of Judea and Samaria belongs to the Jews" and that "we are here because this territory is ours."
A 'terrible' statement which has no place in the Jewish army. The Chief of Staff Zamir was simply horrified and said that such statements are a "severe and professional value failure," a statement attesting that 'the lands of Judea and Samaria belong to Jews' have no place in the Israeli army. As punishment, the entire division was discharged from active military involvement and transferred to 're-indoctrination' in the spirit of the values of the Israeli army which does not regard portions of the Land of Israel as belonging to the Jews.
Allow us to again emphasize that the one responsible for the 'appalling statement' was a one-and-only soldier, but his entire division was punished because his division was one considered by the army as chareidi, which behooves all of its members to be reeducated because of the sin of a single soldier.
In any other situation, when the army deems that one soldier 'sinned,' he is arraigned on a disciplinary charge and punished accordingly, one way or another. There is no precedence for punishing an entire division for the statement of a single one of its members. But when it involves a division which the army regards as 'chareidi,' there is the fear in the top army echelons that there be 'a rotten apple' which can effect the entire division with the scourge of Messianic beliefs so that the entire division must undergo renewed indoctrination to uproot every twinge of false beliefs of the kind.
And meanwhile, the entire army suffers from a lack of manpower — as the Chief of Staff declares — but he can wait until the division soldiers undergo their reprogramming.
