Between Trump and the Right

by Rabbi Yitzchok Roth

3

The American president has a very short fuse. He demands results here and now, and it doesn't always work out for him. His dream was to end the war between Russia and the Ukraine in a jiffy, and achieve a historic peace in the hope that in Oslo, they would rush to award him with his most coveted prize. If the most despicable terrorist, a lowdown murderer like Arafat, reaped the award, and if former President Obama was awarded this prize after not having lifted as much as a finger to promote world peace, there is no reason why Trump shouldn't receive the prize if he did, after all, accomplish something.

But things don't work for him. He met with Zelensky from Ukraine and abused him before the whole world. He faced Putin in a most humiliating and futile meeting, and the war carries on without any end in sight.

Now, with time on his hands, he desires to put an end to the fighting in the Middle East. Trump is at his wits' end with the never ending war. He finds it difficult to understand why it is not coming to an end and what, exactly, the two sides want. The fine details do not interest him and he is not quite familiar with them. The fact is that he has no idea how many of the hostages are still alive or dead, and in every speech of his, he spouts different unrealistic figures, which doesn't even bother him. He wants to see the end of this war so that he can check off a 'V', at least in this corner of the world.

Netanyahu knows full well that he mustn't rile Trump, lest he suddenly turn against him. The simplest way to do this is to inform the American president that Israel agrees to accept his 21 point program, even if it is not the government's dream solution. Now he has to pray that Hamas will reject the program or begin arguing over it, which will allow the war to carry on, which one would expect to happen, primarily because the basis of the plan requires that immediately following the signing of a cease-fire, Hamas will have to release all of the hostages within 72 hours. From Hamas' viewpoint, this boils down to their relinquishing their prime card in hand even before it receives what it demands.

The plan has clauses which are not favorable to Israel and even less so, to Hamas. Israel's refusal to accept this plan can cause a rift in its stand with Trump, which is the last thing Netanyahu wants. Suffice him the split with the leaders of most of the Western countries. He needs the American support. But this hesitant person fears that Hamas will agree to the plan, in which case he will find himself dealing with Smotrich and Ben Gvir who will embitter his life. Between those two and Trump, it is not sure whom he will chooså
