Although the former chief legal officer of the Israeli Defense Forces admitted in her letter of resignation that she had lied to the High Court, among other things, some have already hastened to her defense, arguing that she is an Israeli patriot who should be dealt with through sympathy and dignity. One prominent voice is that of a group called, "Forum of 555 Patriots" that includes some 1700 pilots, both active and retired.
This group, founded well before the recent war, was one of those who encouraged reservists to declare that they will not serve during the period when judicial reform was under consideration. In an official statement, they said, "More than 1,000 pilots believe that the legislative path underway will lead to the cessation of volunteering on the part of pilots and other reservists. We call upon the legislators to halt this destructive legislation before it will be too late. Continuation may bring serious harm to the IDF and to the security of the State."
According to documents recovered during the fighting from the cellars of Hamas, one of the reasons that Hamas decided to attack was its belief that the Israeli army is falling apart, due to this and other such statements.
This same forum also came out strongly against the censure and attempt to remove Arab MK Ayman Odeh from the Knesset because of his support for terror, after he expressed support for the release of convicted terrorists (in exchange for Israeli hostages). The effort failed, but the forum issued a statement in opposition to his removal.
We did not hear any protest from them against the clearly undemocratic proposal advances by MKs Lapid and Lieberman to deny the right to vote to part of the chareidi community.
Nonetheless they came to the support of "democracy" in the form of the former chief legal officer of the IDF "...who is suspected of crimes to which she seems to have admitted... but she is not an enemy of Israel, but one who served the State faithfully for many years... This notice is in no way ignoring the crimes which the former advocat general seems to have committed,,, but to protest the campaign of abuse directed at her, led no doubt by those who wish to weaken the legal system and to remove the legal adviser of the government."
It is "good" that the State of Israel has defenders of democracy and of its gatekeepers including this senior government legal officer who lied deliberately to the highest legal body of the State of Israel, and including many more who work in that office who must have known what was going on. Moreover she lied to cover up the release of a short clip that prime minister Netanyahu has called the "greatest public relations disaster in the history of the State of Israel." Her efforts to "protect" the Israel legal system caused great damage to the soldiers of the IDF and even to the hostages who were beaten in response to the false accusations made in the released video clip.
