Does Anyone Else Apologize?

by Yitzchok Roth

3

Was it necessary to apologize for the accidental death of the seven members of the World Central Kitchen?

Is it mandatory to dismiss the commander of the division and those responsible for this killing?

Perhaps we should ask a simpler question: Did the Israeli apology and dismissal of the top officials diminish in any way the world censure of an accidental event? The answer is negative, and perhaps even the contrary. The higher that the level of apologies rose, in the same measure, accordingly, did the criticism swell. If Israel is so apologetic, apparently their guilt is justified! And if so, the world must increase the attacks against it.

Not one of the apologizing spokesman failed to present the simple fact that the central cause for that tragic error was the terrorist organization in Gaza itself which utilizes citizens as buffers and personal shields. It works through innocent citizens, uses ambulances as camouflage, and hospitals as centers for terrorist activities. There are terrorists as well.

Only a few days ago, with the withdrawal of Zahal from Khan Yunis, rockets were fired at the south directly at the humanitarian forces area there.

The murderers in Gaza have no ethical conscience. On the contrary, the murder of Gaza citizens is part of their tactics in their fight against Israel.

This is the very reason, and there is no other, which caused the error of identification. The commander in charge thought that the vehicle of the humanitarian aid contained armed Hamas terrorists and therefore ordered firing upon that vehicle. And this should have been the conclusion of the apology. O.K. so we made a mistake, but it is all the fault of Hamas, not ours. After all, no apology can serve its purpose because it simply increases the censure against Israel.

Hypocrisy

The Daily Mail, a very widespread paper, attacks Western leaders for their criticism of Israel.

The columnist writes of an unprecedented hypocrisy, where in all of the wars which the international coalition held against terrorist organizations, tens of thousands of citizens were killed and no one breathed a word about genocide or war crimes.

He brought one example of many: in March 2003 regarding the death of a British reporter riding through a suburb of Basra, Iraq, in a vehicle clearly marked 'Communication'. It turned out that the shot which killed him, his translator and an accompanying photographer came from an American soldier.

The ensuing investigation concluded that the three were accidentally killed by American soldiers, but no one demanded that the American-British coalition leave Iraq immediately, allowing Sadam Hussein to remain in power and continue the search for arms designed for mass murder. An estimated 300,000 Iraqi citizens were killed after the invasion of the coalition powers but no one accused them of genocide.

Similarly with the war in Afghanistan after the devastating terrorist attack in America. With the American invasion, over 45,000 citizens were killed according to an official estimate and no one blamed the Americans with genocide.

The paper writes: "When British or American soldiers accidentally kill innocent citizens, the newspapers or volunteer organizations consider this 'friendly fire' in the heat of battle, but when Israel does the very same thing, it is a severe war crime."
