A Chareidi Boycott of Angel Bakery?

by Dei'ah Vedibur Staff

A boycott of the well-known Israel bakery Angel Bakery is gathering strength. Many yeshivas have already announced that they are cancelling their contracts with the bakery in the wake of a demonstration by a high official of the bakery that was considered insulting to kovod haTorah. It is gathering strength among all segments of the chareidi community.

Nonetheless, on Friday morning Yated Ne'eman announced in the name of Maran Rosh Hayeshiva shlita: "We are not reacting to the provocative events of yesterday near the Torah halls."

On Thursday morning there was a demonstration in Bnei Brak opposite the home of Maran Rosh Hayeshiva HaRav Gershon Edelstein shlita. They "subject" of the demonstrators was the tired old complaint that chareidim do not serve in the army. There was no special reason to hold it now, and the way it was conducted was considered derogatory of kovod HaTorah. Bar Lev was very proud of his actions and posted pictures on social media.

What was different about this demonstration was that one of the prominent participants was Omar Bar Lev, a former government minister and general, and recently appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Angel Bakery. Since the chareidi community is one of the best customers of Angel Bakery, there was widespread outrage that a senior member of its management would demonstrate in such a manner against the entire community and its deeply-held values.

By Thursday night, several big yeshivas announced that they would no longer buy Angel products. According to press reports these included Chevron Yeshiva (Givat Mordechai), Netiv HaDaas-Kaplan, Netivot HaChochmah (Wolfson) and Nachlas HaLeviim. There was a report that the Mir Yeshiva also canceled its supply contract with Angel.

MK Rabbi Avraham Betzalel of Shas coordinated an effort to enlist other institutions. Many chareidi politicians such as Beitar Mayor Rabbi Meir Rubinstein, issued strong statements condemning the insult to Torah and to gedolei Yisrael.
