An Excerpt from His Biography: Getting Married

When the time came to speak of Maran about matrimony, a shidduch was suggested with Bas Sheva Esther, eldest daughter of Maran, HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv, the ultimate posek of the generation, who become his wife.

The shadchan was from the side of the chosson, his uncle the Chazon Ish. Representing the kalla was HaRav Ben Zion Bruk, Rosh Yeshiva Beis Yosef in Yerushalayim who knew the kalla's grandfather, HaRav Arye Levine, very closely.

The Chazon Ish said to the Steipler, HaRav Chaim's father, that the kalla was a true bas talmid chochom in the fullest sense of the title and fit to become the wife of his illustrious son. A letter which the Chazon Ish sent at that time described him as "one who is totally [immersed] in study."

As the shidduch progressed, HaRav Eliashiv traveled to Yeshivas Lomzhe in Petach Tikva to size up the proposed young man and speak with him 'in learning.' Afterwards, he traveled to the Chazon Ish, where he heard much praise about his outstanding nephew, who described him as "the Rogatchover of the coming generation."

A few days later the engagement was finalized. The rebbetzin later told that during the engagement period, she was invited to spend a Shabbos in the chosson's home in Bnei Brak. In those days, you had to travel first to the Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv and from there to take a bus to Bnei Brak. When she arrived at the chosson's home, her future father-in-law asked in surprise, "Where is the chosson?"

It turned out that he had traveled to Tel Aviv in order to accompany her. She said that she hadn't seen him waiting for her.

His father decided to look for him in Tel Aviv and found him sitting on a bench, totally engrossed in his gemara, oblivious of the passing time and forgetting what he was doing there altogether. He had not seen the kallah when she arrived.

The wedding took place on Thursday, 7 Kislev, 5712 at the HaTzvi hall in Petach Tikva. The chuppah was at 3 in the afternoon, and many great rabbonim came in honor of the two prominent mechutonim, the Steipler and HaRav Eliashiv.
