Chutznikim Living in Israel are Asked to Become Israeli Citizens for the Elections

Upon the directive of the Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Gershon Edelstein, all residents of Israel of foreign extraction who have not been registered as Israeli citizens, are being called upon to be partners in building up the Torah world in Eretz Yisrael and to complete the process of becoming citizens at the Interior Ministry so that they can be included in the register of voters in the upcoming elections to the Knesset.

In a special call on behalf of Degel HaTorah, it was conveyed that one must begin this process as soon as possible by seeking help from the party branch in Yerushalayim or to apply directly to the Interior Ministry and begin the process. The Population Authority has agreed to the request of Degel HaTorah and in the upcoming days, appointments will be made available for applications for Identification Cards.

MK Rabbi Yitzchok Pindrus spoke with Yated Ne'eman and said that he heard that the Rosh Yeshiva was encouraging those who had questions on this matter to say that one should certainly acquire citizenship "so that more votes can be added to declare that they belong to UTJ, which will augment Kiddush Hashem. This is in addition to the privilege of being partners in the building of the Torah world in Eretz Yisroel."

Rabbi Pindrus adds that this directive was declared in past elections and was then conveyed in the same words by HaRav Chaim Kanievsky to all who asked, and he even added that "they will not suffer damage in any way from this step."

In view of this call across the board from our Torah leadership, Degel HaTorah appeals to the general public to assist those in question to carry out their citizenship process in the relevant government offices. "It is a drawn out process but must be done immediately in the Population Authority offices," he stressed.
