What Do We Learn from our Generation's Remarkable Technology?

HaRav Moshe Rosenstein zt"l
3

In a letter to his talmid HaRav Avrohom Sokolovski zt"l, the mashgiach of Lomzha, HaRav Moshe Rosenstein zt"l, explained what we can learn from modern technology.

By what merit did this generation, a dissolute, corrupt generation which declared: `Leave me be, I have no desire to know Your ways,' deserve the recent revelation of so many beneficial and marvelous things in the fields of electronics and medicine, and all these through people who are removed from Torah and piety? Would it not have been better that these discoveries be made by people replete with Torah but also well-versed in the fields of science and medicine etc.? Would it not have generated much honor for Hashem?

This question disturbed me for a long time, but just now I became aware of something amazing which can fortify our emunah in far greater measure than the other way. This was shown to us from Heaven, by demonstrating the validity of man's intellect and how true and effective is man's intellect in everything to which it is applied.

No one can deny the benefit and the achievements of all the extraordinary things achieved by men of science and their this-worldly knowledge. We see how effective and reliable human research was in being applied to knowledge of this world.

We can thereby know without doubt to what great measure we can rely upon Chazal, who toiled throughout their lives with their tremendous intellect to attain the truth of emunah and the purpose of man on earth, and how successful we can expect them to have been from their efforts.
