A Home of His Own for Every Ben Torah: Working on the Shidduch Crisis in Israel

by HaRav Gershon Twersky

3

A special gathering took place at the home of the Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Gershon Eidelstein, attended by gedolei Yisroel, rabbonim and roshei yeshiva regarding a solution for the pressing problem of shidduchim. This gathering was initiated by the "Lev Echad" organization, established by HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, rosh yeshiva of Slobodka in Bnei Brak, who has undertaken to solve the problem through various activities geared to ease the burden of parents seeking to find a suitable match for their children.

"The Shidduchim Center for the Torah public in Israel, the "Lev Echad" organization, promoted this meeting. Its goal is to work on a resolution to the pressing problem of finding suitable matches for young yeshiva students and seminary graduates. Several attempts have been made during this past year, including advisory meetings and brainstorming in seeking the crux of the problem of what has being holding up the finding of one's mate.

The organization is now launching a project of a data base of names of the bnei yeshivos and the seminary graduates of the relevant ages, with no exceptions. This will provide access to information for those involved in making shidduchim so that they can supply the necessary information to those seeking matrimony.

Special forms have been prepared which parents are asked to fill out in detail. The rabbonim of the organization stress that these forms will be kept private and only be made available to recognized shadchonim whose integrity is recognized by the rabbonim of the organization, to be used purely according to the terms of the organization.

The aforementioned meeting was called to inform the public of this initiative and urge it to cooperate with it, per request of the prominent figures who attended it, as well as the urging of the Rosh Yeshiva himself, in whose home it took place.

It should be noted that when it was suggested to the Rosh Yeshiva that people might be wary and reluctant to fill out such forms for various reasons, he said repeatedly, "That is a foolish concern."
