The Religious Proposals of the New Government

by Yated Staff

3

Two major changes, called "reforms," are being talked about in the Ministry of Religions by Minister Mattan Kahane. One is called the "The Kashrus Reform" which has been formally proposed, and the other has been proposed by his associates to be instated, namely, the Conversion Reform." Both of these are strongly supported by the Treasury Minister Avigdor Lieberman whose supporters are largely the non-Jews who have infiltrated the vineyard of Jewry in Israel.

After these reforms become facts, against the vehement opposition of all religious circles and communities, including prominent rabbis from the Dati-Leumi public, any producer of food products from Eilat, for example, who fears that the local rabbi will refuse to grant him a kashrus certificate, will be able to approach a rabbi from another city to endorse his products.

This is similar to the law of conversion, where the rabbi of any city will be empowered to perform or approve a 'conversion' where the candidate fears that his local rabbi may be too stringent and refuse to do so. Thus, the conversion 'ceremony' is up for grabs. This law has also been vehemently opposed by the majority of all rabbonim of all circles, also including the rabbonim of the Dati-Leumi public.

Up until now, these areas have been under the central control of the Chief Rabbinate, which is still largely professional and halachically committed. The local rabbis of communities are associated with the general Rabbinate, but they are from a broader range of backgrounds.
