A Special Letter of Chizuk from HaRav Chaim Kanievsky

by Yisrael Rosner

3

A special letter of chizuk from HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, author of "Derech Emunah", addresses the situation and the difficult calamity. He replies to the many questions he receives regarding "Why has Hashem wrought this upon us?"

His son, HaRav Yitzchok Shaul Kanievsky, publicized a letter in which he writes, "I sat by my father on the Shabbos following the tragedy which visited us on Lag BaOmer in Meron and I noted that everyone was asking the same question, asking me to address it to my father: Why has Hashem done this to us, and what are we supposed to mend in order to halt the Measure of Judgment?

"He replied, `This is a Heavenly decree and we cannot know the workings of Heaven.'"

And HaRav Yitzchok Shaul adds, "I asked him how were we supposed to make amends?

"He replied, `To fortify ourselves in Torah study and diligence therein.' He repeated this several times," notes this favored son in his letter and added, in the name of his father, "And women should reinforce themselves in modesty."

Several moments later, notes his son, he said, "...and [the public] is not stringent enough in washing hands before a meal in all of its particular laws. One must also strengthen oneself in concentrated thought in saying brochos and sense a closeness to Hashem."

In this letter, HaRav Yitzchok Shaul also added this comment to the words of his father: "Study the passage in the Tur Orach Chaim 46, discussing that Dovid Hamelech instituted one hundred daily brochos following the tragedy of one hundred people dying each day. Look up the Zohar Chodosh on Rus, p. 105b regarding the importance of hand-washing before a meal."

The letter concludes by saying that Maran blessed and prayed that "He Who said `Enough' to His world, should also say `Halt' to the Angel of Destruction, and may no calamity and misfortune continue to visit our land."

In signing his son's letter, he stated, "These messages are true and correct."
