Rabbi Gafni: The Attorney General Ignores Lieberman's Antisemitic Attacks

by Binyomin Rabinowitz

"Lieberman speaks like one of the worst anti-Semites in the world, even foaming at the mouth. In a letter, I appealed to the attorney general, and spoke to him twice as well, but to my great regret, received no reply.

"It is clear to all that if such words had been spoken or written against any group favored by the public or by the media, the situation would be altogether different and a legal charge would have been issued against him. But against chareidim, no bars hold."

Rabbi Gafni tells that in a talk he had with the advisor, Avichai Mandelblit, about the anti-Semitic words of Lieberman and his cohorts, the former replied, "What do you want me to do? They attack me as well, demonstrate against me and incite against me, and I even have to have police protection. Just answer back to him!"

It is clear that if we want to deal with this thoroughly, we have to amend the law that deals with provocation. But at this moment he argues that he does not have the tools to work against this terrible incitement."

According to Gafni, Lieberman can say whatever he wants, but the most serious thing is that they give him a platform and broadcast every lie and inanity he utters. "I said to Mandelblit that if Lieberman were to speak against another group in the country, he would be able to charge him legally. I stressed that if he spoke out against any public favored by the Israeli media, it would not remain thus, and that man would be receive a summons. But against the chareidim, the answer is: 'You just answer back. You know what to say.'"

"I sent him a letter with full details of the provocations but to my regret, nothing was done. Our blood is free for all. When will they decide to stop this incitement? When something happens, some tragedy caused to or by the rabble victims."
