A Plan to Open Yeshivos in Eretz Yisrael was Approved

by C Honig and Dei'ah Vedibur Staff

After much effort an agreement was reached with the responsible authorities and experts to open yeshivas in something approximating the usual format, while safeguarding the health of all involved.

The plan requires breaking the talmidim up into small groups of no more than 26, with each group operating totally independently for two weeks. Each group will daven, learn, eat and sleep without any contact with any other group. This will be for an initial period of two weeks or 14 days.

After this initial period, all groups that have remained free of any symptoms of COVID-19 will then be able to join together and function as a single yeshiva. However they will be required to have no contact with anyone outside the group.

It was not made clear how the rabbonim will interact with the groups or with the yeshiva, especially rabbonim who are older than 60.

Not every yeshiva is set up in such a way that they can follow these instructions. However, there are reports that Or Yisroel in Petach Tikva and Ateres Shlomo in Rishon Letzion are planning to implement the plan starting in the next few days.

The Ministry of Education has announced that it will open the lower elementary grades, 1-3. However it is not clear if chareidi schools will also open, at least at first. Rabbonim expressed reservations about doing so, and said that the higher grades are more important. Some suggested waiting to see what the consequences are elsewhere.
